Gustave Moonen


Gustave Moonen is Professor emeritus of Neurology at the University of Liège, Belgium. From 2005 to 2012 he was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Liège. Since 2000 he is member of the Executive Committee of the European Neurological Society (ENS). He was President of the ENS in 2007-2008 and since 2009 he is Secretary-General of the ENS.

His broad research interest covered developmental neuroscience, biology of neuronal migration and of radial glia, neural stem cells biology, protection and repair of the nervous system and of Corti’s organ and clinical evaluation of functional imaging of vegetative state and minimally conscious patients and locked in syndromes.

He received several awards including awards from the American Physiological Society, the FNRS, the Queen Elisabeth Medical Foundation, the Belgian neurological society and the Belgian Royal Academies of Medicine and of Sciences. In 1997 he was awarded the Franqui chair at the University of Namur.

Gustave Moonen received his MD and PhD from the University of Liège. He did postdocs at the CNRS in Strasbourg (France), NICHD-NIH and UCSD San Diego (USA).
