Peter Raeymaekers


Peter Raeymaekers was trained as a molecular geneticist and has 15 years’ experience in biotechnology and life science research. He worked in academic research centers, including the University of Antwerp, the University of Leuven and the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology (VIB) as well as in industry (IntelliGenetics and Janssen (J&J)).

He focused his research on the genetics of early onset Alzheimer’s disease, peripheral neuropathies, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.  

In 1999 he started his own science and technology communication company (LyRaGen) and specialized in science journalism, science and technology writing, technology assessment projects, facilitation of science workshops, debates and round tables.

He also advises organizations on their medical/scientific projects or gives support in their policymaking. Examples include the setup of NERF (Neuro-Electronics Research Flanders), a research initiative of VIB, IMEC and the KU Leuven; recommendations for a Belgian Plan for Rare Diseases (King Baudouin Foundation); the use of advance care planning and advance directives in dementia (EU Joint Action on Dementia and King Baudouin Foundation).

Peter Raeymaekers became scientific advisor to the Foundation for Dystonia Research in 2012.
